Painting Commissioning Process

Stage 1 – Briefing process.

The first stage is to go through a briefing process between the client and the artist. At this stage we can discuss palette, scale, atmosphere of painting, and referencing other artworks.  It is helpful to also have an understanding of the space that the painting is being created for, so the client may supply images of the site, as well as finishes and colour palettes within the space. The artist will supply a quotation for the commission after this process.

Stage 2 – Payment of deposit.

Before commencing any works on the commission the artist requires payment of a non-refundable deposit. This may vary depending on the value of the commission, however the deposit amount is usually $1000 per artwork.

Stage 3 – Painting of the commission.

The time it will take for your commission to be painted will be dependent on the artist’s schedule of works. Please allow between 1 – 3 months for the completion of your artwork. The artist will be able to indicate how long this process will take at the time of booking in the commission. Works will only begin once deposit payment is made.

Stage 4 – Completion of painting commission

On completion of the painting, the artist will forward images of the artwork. Full payment of the final invoice is required prior to release of the artwork. Additional services to the painting commission are available and can be organised by the artist and supplied at an additional cost. These include framing, delivery and hanging.

Large-scale commissions & corporate projects

Creating large-scale works to commission is a process that Rowena is very experienced with. She has worked extensively with architects, interior designers and property developers to bring concepts to realisation.

Rowena is open to discussing projects from building inception and planning stage, and feels that the best result is achieved when an artwork is integrated into the overall building concept.

Opening project discussions will incorporate site analysis, timeline, brief and budget. The artist maintains an open dialogue with the client, and can provide full concept mock-ups prior to commencing any works. A staged payment breakdown will also be presented prior to contracting the artist.

Murals & public artworks

A large component of Rowena’s practice is painting murals (large-scale public walls) onsite.

Murals can span from being public commissions from local government, to domestically scaled in a client’s private space. Each project is unique, but the approach is much the same.

The first stage is to undertake a site visit. Here the artist can determine the scale of the wall and any access equipment that will be required. At this stage Rowena likes to get a full understanding of what the client has in mind for the wall. If a site visit is not feasible, photographs, drawings and measurements can be supplied instead.

Following this process Rowena will come back to the client with a full project outline; incorporating timeline, budget and an artwork mock-up. A staged payment breakdown will also be presented prior to contracting the artist.

Rowena is fully insured for public liability and public indemnity to the value of $20 million. She holds the required Elevated Work Permits to operate scissor and boom lifts should they be required.
