Colourboss

Colourboss marked a significant evolution in Rowena Martinich’s studio practice. Presented at OzDare Creative Space, Collingwood in October 2018, the exhibition brought together a powerful new body of work defined by chromatic intensity, energy and dynamism.

Across the paintings, liquid gestures sweep, drag and marble through pools of colour, intersecting with finer expressionist marks and accumulated layers of paint. The resulting compositions are energetic and expansive, pushing Martinich’s abstract language into a more complex and immersive territory.

The exhibition was anchored by two large scale murals spanning a combined 12 metres, alongside major works on canvas. It also included a photographic retrospective of Martinich’s public art projects from the preceding decade, together with video documentation of her studio process, connecting the immediacy of the paintings with the scale and physicality of her wider practice.
